2/4/16 HAZMAT Alarm
At approximately 1110HRS SCFD4 was dispatched to Eastbound Interstate 70 near MM343 on a reported large oil spill. Upon arrival units located a semi which suffered a critical mechanical malfunction causing the engine to dump oil over a 100-150 yard stretch of I70. We wish to thank our partners, the Shawnee County Department of Emergency Management; for assisting in guiding us through a potential spill notification. Fortunately a spill notification was not necessary, the oil did not reach any soil or contaminate water. The Kansas Department of Transportation responded with multiple trucks and personnel ultimately working to clean the road surface. According to a release by NE Kansas Public Affairs Manager Kimberly Qualls, I70 was returned to normal operations around 1330HRS this afternoon. Thanks to KDOT our responders were able to clear around 1250HRS and return to our full time jobs!
