3/3/17 K4 in Shawnee Co. reopens following large grass fire

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Fire crews from several area departments battled a large grass fire Friday afternoon in southwest Shawnee Co.

The situation forced crews to close K4 in southwest Shawnee Co., between Hodges and Hoch Rds. It reopened just before 5:30 p.m.

Shawnee County Fire District 4 received a call of grass fire just after 2 p.m. Friday and quickly worked on getting control of the situation.

With a few structures in the area at risk, crews called for mutual aid to focus on defensive fire tactics.

The situation has now been put under control as the focus has turned to making sure hot spots are out.

Dry air and extremely windy conditions have allowed for many parts of the area to be under a very high risk including Shawnee County. With little rain in sight and more windy conditions expected, the fire risk will likely continue into the weekend.

The exact cause of the fire is still unclear, but crews are investigating.

This is a developing story. 13 NEWS will post updates as they are available.

9/2/19 5 Manhattan firefighters heading to Florida for Hurricane Dorian

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Five members of the Manhattan Fire Dept. are taking their emergency rescue skills to Florida, to help the people there make it through Hurricane Dorian.

On Monday, the fire department shared a picture of the quintet lined up as they got ready to deploy. They packed up their Rescue 2 unit and an SUV to make the trip and are taking along a UTV as well.

The agency says it's all part of the the Kansas State Fire Marshal Office's statewide task force.

Members of the Dover Fire Dept. are also set to deploy to Florida later Monday as well.

Dorian is expected to begin pulling away from the Bahamas early Tuesday and curve to the northeast parallel to the southeastern coast of the U.S. The system is expected to spin 40 to 50 miles off Florida, with hurricane-force wind speeds extending about 35 miles to the west.

Authorities in Florida ordered mandatory evacuations in some vulnerable coastal areas. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned his state that it could see heavy rain, winds and floods later in the week.
